Cabaret: A Fashion Editorial for Falcon Magazine
When I received the comp card of Lilli Clewing, represented by Vienna-based modeling agency Tempo Models, I immediately knew I wanted to work with her. Her striking mix of classical elegance and modern edge became the starting point for this editorial, shot in my favorite studio in Vienna for Falcon Magazine.
Together with Ukrainian stylist Anna Romanko and Austrian makeup artist Vanessa Standhartinger, I developed a clean, cinematic concept — one that would allow both the styling and the model’s presence to carry the mood. We shot on a crisp April afternoon, drawing on old Hollywood references, 1930s cabarets, and minimalist stage lighting to shape the visual language.
The idea was to keep the setups simple but sculptural — avoiding visual clutter while introducing small elements of motion and fabric play. Each look built around a central piece: pleated metallics, bridal satin, oversized bows, sheer gloves. We let the styling speak through line and texture, with subtle shifts in lighting to echo the mood of each garment.
The editorial moves fluidly between eras: at times referencing classic haute couture silhouettes, at others veering into something more playful or surreal. We wanted to capture that cabaret tension — between drama and elegance, structure and whimsy — without becoming too literal.
For the final few looks, I experimented with light painting — a slower, more meditative process I’ve been drawn to for some time. While it’s a departure from the immediacy of flash photography, it brought a certain surreal softness to the images. I’m grateful the Falcon editors chose to include some of these moments in the final selection. They feel like a subtle bridge between fashion and fine art — and a small risk that paid off.
